Applying for the Truck Test Category C and C1

Once you are 18 years old or older you may apply for the 2 part truck theory test. The 1st part is the theory test. Upon completion of this you must sit and pass the CPC test. Again upon successful completion of both of these tests you may apply to the RSA for the practical truck driving test. There is an exemption of the CPC test for driving instructors. A driving instructor does not have to sit the CPC tests to apply for the practical truck test, they must sit the truck theory test.

The Category C vehicle

The vehicle must be supplied by the candidate for the driving test.  For the Category C practical driving test  and since the 1st January 2004 the vehicle being used must have a gross vehicle weight of at least 12,000kgs, not seat more than 8 passengers, have a length of at least 8 metres, a width of at least 2.4 metres and be capable of a speed of at least 80klms per hour, it must have ABS, and at least 8 forward gears. There must be a tachograph installed and the body must be a closed box shape at least as wide and as high as the cab.

The Category C1 vehicle

For the Category C1 practical driving test the vehicle being used for the test must have a gross vehicle weight of at least  4,000kgs but less than 7,500kgs, not must be able to accommodate more than 8 people, be at least 5 metres in lenght and be capable of a speed of at least 80klms per hour. The vehicle should have ABS fitted aswell as a tacograph, and have a closed box body which is at least the same height and width as the cab.

Both these Categories allow you to tow a trailer of not more than 750kgs gross vehicle weight.
