A person holding a driving licence issued by any of the countries listed below may exchange it for an Irish permit of the same vehicle category once they take up permanent residence in Ireland, without being required to sit a driving test. The licence must be by law exchanged within one year of taking up residency.

The countries currently eligible to exchange without haveing to sit any tests are:
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Iceland, Isle of Man, Italy, Japan, Jersey, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.

If you hold a driving licence from any other country you will be required to sit and pass the driving theory test and then apply for a learner permit. After receiving your learner permit you must then wait six months before you can sit the practical driving test.
