Driver Theory Test

The driver theory test examines your knowledge and understanding of the following: rules of the road (see theory book), good driving behaviour, risk perception and hazard perception. You must pass the Driver Theory Test before you can apply for a Learner Permit. The test involves answering questions on a touch screen computer in a test centre which is run by the Driver Theory Testing Service.

To apply for your Theory Test you can apply online at www.theorytest.ie  or  www.dtts.ie

In this video you will see what you should expect when you arrive to sit the driver theory test in Ireland. The video explains exactly how the test works. ID is required, personal belongings are not allowed in the test area. A photo will be taken. You will then be shown the computer and given a simple demonstration of how the system works. Remember prepare well and good luck.

After you pass the theory test you may then apply to your local motor tax office for your learner permit and include your theory test certificate with your application form and other documents. When you have your learner permit you should book driving lessons from a professional Road Safety Authority Approved Driving Instructor (RSA ADI) to learn how to drive safely and correctly. Click on the driving instruction section of ldrivers.ie to find an approved RSA ADI in your area.

Safe driving,
